Ever wondered what scares the scary? Ask owner of the eerie Haunted Bookshop and self-proclaimed Satanist Drew Sinton what the scariest book he’s ever read is and he’ll tell you it’s the Australian Income Tax Guide. Sink into his underworld where ghouls and demons run wild and free. To Sinton, Hollywood, Harry Potter and other ‘new-age’ magick theories have destroyed the true essence of the occult. As for witchcraft, sensationalism has driven it out from the underground, churning out spells and potions like Starbucks lattes. The occult is no laughing matter and at the Haunted Bookshop, the Dark Arts are taken very seriously. Seekers of knowledge will find subjects on vampires, Satanism, magick, tarot, the paranormal and ancient wisdom. Don’t expect fluffy trinkets or voodoo-looking spellboxes. Look around and you will see ouija boards, a display table which is actually a coffin, and a couple of dusty crucifixes. Throw in some vintage lamps, a medieval head press, velvet curtains and you end up with an overall dark atmosphere and a seriously tingly feeling. If you are unlucky, Pazuzu the black cat and resident familiar will stray across your path. Sinton is not without a sense of humour however, hiding in the corners are friendlier ghosts like Casper and Slimer from the Ghostbusters. Give yourself a break from your usual Saturday night routine and check out some real spirits. Sign up for the notorious Ghost Tour that takes you to some of the craziest spine-chilling places in Melbourne. Remember, ‘to a believer, no proof is necessary, to a skeptic, no proof is acceptable’.
